 Vehicle Registration

Residents of Manatee and Sarasota Counties, must register their vehicles within 10 days of gaining employment or registering their children in school. To register your vehicle you must provide your driver’s license, proof of insurance, prior registration if applicable and proof of title, at the main offices listed below. The vehicle number will be verified and you will be required to have a Florida license plate. There will be a fee which varies depending on the weight of the vehicle.

 Driver’s License

You must apply for a driver’s license within 30 days of moving to Florida. You will need proof of vehicle registration, out of state license and will be required to take a vision test. If you are applying for a license for the first time, you will need to take a written and practical test, and be able to provide a car to take the driving test. You will also need your Social Security Number. Make an appointment or you could be waiting hours to actually take the test. The test is based on the Florida Driver’s Handbook which the offices below, will be able to provide to you.

TRIM (Truth in Millage) is sent out in August. This provides the amount you will pay for property taxes for the current year. The Property Appraisers office at 941 748 8208 or is responsible for assessing the taxes and if you need to contest the assessment you should contact this office. You should apply for a homestead exemption once you are a permanent resident which means you do not pay taxes on the first $50,000 of the home’s appraised value.
Tax bills are mailed out on a or about November 1st of each year with the following discounts in effect for early payment:
4% if paid in November, 3% if paid in December, 2% if paid in January, 1% if paid in February and gross taxes become due in March. Taxes become delinquent April 1st and additional charges will become due. Discounts are accepted according to the POSTMARK of your payment. You should receive your bill by November 15th. The law also allows taxpayers to pay their taxes on an installment plan if their estimated tax due is more than $100.

Sales Tax
When shopping, be aware that the tax is added at the register so the price advertised is lower than the actual cost.
For Manatee County the sales tax is 6.5%
For Sarasota County the sales tax is 7%
